A good friend of mine asked me if you can really make money online blogging.

I looked at him somewhat confused by the question. I thought maybe it was trick questions or something. It was only when I realized he was serious I said emphatically: YES!

Looking back on this, I guess I can see the reason for the question. People are starting to look for additional ways to make money from home. I mean, who really wants to spend all of your life at work? Not me, that’s for sure.

But the extent of his question is from the basis everyone you just about know has a blog, and they do not make any money at it. So why not? Are they just having a blog for the fun of it? Or, do they really not know how to make money blogging? I lean towards the latter question.

To make money blogging does take a little skill. Not much, but there are some steps you need to take to ensure you are on the right path and at least have a chance at making some money.

For starters, you need to have a topic you are well versed in, or are very interested in. Do not think for one second you will be able to fake your way through a topic just to make some money at it. It will never happen. So, choose your topic wisely.

The next step is the part most people leave out. They do not do their research before they start writing. But, now that I know this, I can serve up any product to them just the way they like it.

But, it is entirely possible to (in a relatively short time period) build up a stable of several hundred small blogs which average $0.25 to $2.00 a day in earnings.

So let’s break down a list of ways to generate money from blogging.

1. Advertising your own, or even your companies products. Maybe you have an online store or maybe your company manufactures a certain line of products. Blogging is a way to connect to your market and turn them into loyal, involved readers. Whereas before you had a boring shopping cart, now with a blog, you are showing your human side. Your business website begins to “talk” to your site visitors through the blog.

2. Advertising other peoples products. In the internet marketing world, this is called affiliate marketing. You write article reviews or you may even just simply mention a product on your blog website, with a link to the product page on the seller’s website. Clicks are tracked and successful transactions are credited to you via commissions (Pay Per Action). You may find products to promote on Clickbank, eBay, Amazon, Commission Junction, LinkShare and ShareASale. Of course, you owe it to your blog readers to be honest in your reviews.

3. Pasting advertisements on your blog or the “Passive Method”. This may also fall under promoting other products, but putting ads is a passive method compared to outright promotion. In this method examples of these are advertising networks such as AdSense, AdBrite, Chitika, Shopping Ads and Widget Bucks. You do not necessarily endorse the products shown on the ads as these are served by the advertising network. You earn when your visitors simply click on the ads (Pay Per Click). Most of these advertising networks give you the option of having ad content that is relevant to your site and also some offer you the option of choosing what ads are shown on your website.

4. Selling advertising space. In this passive method, you do not depend on any action from your blog visitors. You make money from people who pay for web real estate or space on your blog. In this method, you know how much you will earn on a regular basis. You will sell advertisements only when you get a good amount of traffic and in some cases, a good number of RSS Subscribers; advertisers usually ask for statistics.

5. Offering your writing services to another blog. Do you know that there is an entire industry that revolves around freelance blogging? Yes, you need not have your own blog to make money from blogging. You may “ghost write” or become a regular staff for a blog or blog network who may pay per post or per month. Usually, however, you need to show samples of your blogging wizardry before you land a job. In that case, you may have to start blogging for yourself first.

6. Selling your blog. Blogs are properties and if your blog becomes hot property due to a blog post that gets Digged or gets media attention, you may even get offers from companies or people who want to own your blog, and these are usually blog networks. But since a blog is only as good as its blogger, actually selling your blog does not mean giving away the website and leaving with your money. You may be asked to remain as the blogger, but you may be given a salary for staying there. The concession is, advertising revenue goes to the blog network who bought your blog.

So as you can see there are a number of ways you can make money from blogging. You can use one of the methods I have listed here or all of them at the same time. You just need to be comfortable in writing your blog and you can have fun and make money at the same time.

Make Money with A Blog – An empty promise?

Ninety-nine percent of people that start blogs with the intent to earn money will quit within the first month simply because they will never earn anything…

Yet, SOME earn hundreds of dollars a month from blogging. A few, even earn thousands. What’s the difference?

Many of the bloggers who earn money online, offer tips to others about how they earn their money. These tips provide very useful strategy, BUT…. typically you have to then learn how to carry out that strategy – how exactly does one set up an RSS feed? And while you might find an article “RSS made easy” that will tell you how to complete this process in 20 or 30 minutes. Multiply the number of pieces of information like that times a half hour (to find the information and implement it) and you are looking at a full-time job for a week. A very frustrating week too. Because all the while you are getting this information, one voice in your head will be saying “If this doesn’t work, you’ll have wasted a lot of time.” And another voice will be saying, “There should be an easier way.” Well, guess what? There IS an easier way. See the next section.

Web 2.0 Wealth system is “blogging for the rest of us.” The rest of us meaning everyone that doesn’t want to spend hours on their computer or doesn’t already know how to setup an RSS feed or thinks that a few dozen visitors to their website each week is about as good as it gets, etc. The rest of us.

Easy, because virtually all of the blogging code is downloaded and installed in a few steps. Yes, you have configuration to do after that, but all the thinking has been done for the configuration. Blogs are great because you can talk about whatever you want, from your point of view. Some people may not enjoy the content in your blog, so allow comments. Comment-section debates can make readers come back a lot!

There are lots of sites out there that offer to give you money for taking surveys and reading emails and other stuff like that. To tell you the truth, making money online is not as easy as simply taking a survey or reading an email, most of those survey sites are either total scams or make you jump through so many hoops to get your money that it is virtually impossible without losing you personal information or losing money. This article will show you how to make REAL money online while investing very little or no money. It is by no means “free” money because you will still have to put in significant time and effort to make decent profits.

How much can I make?

The money you make really depends on how much time and effort you put in. You could make anything from 1 to 7 figure yearly income. Be sure to choose a good subject for your blog, don’t make it about yourself or you will not make very much money. Make it about something people will want to read about like, “How to make money online,” or “How to start your own restaurant.” Once you have created your blog, go to the Blogger Dashboard and next to your blog, click “Monetize.” It now offers you the option of creating a free AdSense account. What Google AdSense does is puts advertisements on your blog and whenever a visitor clicks an ad money is sent to your AdSense account and when the money in your AdSense account reaches a certain amount a check is sent to you in the mail. Go ahead and sign up for a free AdSense Account and set your blog up to show ads. You can now view your blog and see that there are Google ads on your page (only Google service ads will show until Google finishes reviewing your AdSense application). Now one important note here DO NOT click the ads, you yourself clicking the ads is illegal and can get your AdSense account banned. You also may not put anything on your website asking visitors to click your ads. Now, time to start making content, but first go to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool and enter in a keyword that describes your blog and click “Get Keyword Ideas.” This will give you a list of keywords related to the keyword you entered. It gives you statistics for advertiser competition, monthly search volume and other things. Pick a few keywords highly related to your blog with high monthly search volume and relatively low advertiser competition. The whole point of doing this is to get keywords that will help your blog show up higher in search engine results. If your blog shows up high in search engine results, more people find your blog, which means more people click on your ads, which means more money for you. If you neglect to try to increase your blog’s ranking in the search engines, very few (if any) people will visit your blog meaning very little or no money for you.

Creating Content

Now it is time to start writing. If you **** writing or aren’t very good at it, there is still a chance for you. If you have some money in your pocket go to getafreelancer.com and get some content written for you. Whether you are writing your own content or having it written for you, you want your posts to be rich in the keywords you selected above. Try to make your content as focused and informative as possible and use good grammar. Good writing will attract more readers. You will want to create a post every day or every other day in order to keep visitors coming back for more. Promoting your blog

Perhaps the easiest way to promote your blog and drive more traffic to it is article writing. What you do is write an article (or get one written for you) and then submit it to several article directories including a link to your blog at the bottom of your article. People have been keeping journals and diaries for centuries. Without them, much of the world’s wisdom would have already been lost. Why? Because some of the greatest writers of all time have used their journals to jot down their thoughts and ideas each day. They would then refer to these daily notes while they were writing their books and articles.

Without their diaries, Sam Clemens (aka: Mark Twain), Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Shaw, Bertrand Russell, Oscar Wilde and thousands more, wouldn’t have been able to produce the masterpieces that they did. 

Decades later, the internet has changed the way that people keep diaries.

What has advent of the internet done to change this? Well, in a nutshell, it has transformed what was once a very personal pastime, into a very public affair. Instead of keeping your innermost thoughts private, people can now share their thoughts, feelings and ideas with the whole world, at least, with anybody who has an internet connection and a computer with a web browser.

So what has all this to do with making money on the internet? Well, a “blog” is a shortened term for “Web Log” and “blogging” has come to mean nothing more than simply making a log of your daily thoughts, feelings and ideas available to anyone who wants to read them. In other words, an online journal.

Several years ago, around about 1997, somebody (there is some debate as to whom the very first blogger was, but the names often mentioned are Justin Hall, Jorn Barger and Dave Winer) created some simple software that made it possible to write down their daily thoughts and publish them to the internet. Since then, millions of people have chosen to do likewise and the number is growing by the day.

The number of people blogging has grown rapidly for several reasons, not least of which is the software itself (otherwise known as a “blogging platform”), which has developed to such a degree that it is not only easy to set-up your own website as a blog, but it is also a perfect way to both FIND and COMMUNICATE with LIKE MINDED people. The old way of journaling simply couldn’t do this.

So, instead of relying on your location on the planet, and fate in general, you can now actively find people who are interested in the same things that YOU are interested in, regardless of location, age, race etc. Language IS still an issue, but with online translation tools, even that is becoming less of a problem each year.

The software currently available has many features, allowing a blog reader to search older articles (called “posts”) by name, keyword, category or date, and it also allows for readers to COMMENT on each post, so it makes for a very INTERACTIVE environment, often attracting many people from all over the world who have something to say about what the author has written.

Blogs are often simply personal thoughts, written by people who would like to hear from other people who have similar ideas. They can be little more than a history of a family growing up, or of vacations that people have had. They can be about literally anything in which humans are involved, from pet care to astro-physics.

What are people doing to make money with blogs? Typically, they choose a subject that they are interested in (or preferably PASSIONATE about) and in which they are quite knowledgeable, and they start writing about it. Businesses, ALL business, are little more than people offering products or services (or both) to other people. When the offer is accepted, trades are made; it’s that simple.

But what could be sold via a blog? The honest answer is “pretty much anything”. How is this done? Typically, a good blog demonstrates the author’s expertise in a certain area. It could be horse-grooming or computer-science; whatever it is, when people find your blog, they are almost always looking to GET something. 

To actually make money blogging, you have to offer the same thing; products or services. You can create your own product such as a book that you can offer your readers, but, just like a retailer with a shop, you can also offer OTHER PEOPLE’S PRODUCTS.  To find products related to your blog, which your readers might  be interested in buying, you can go to Clickbank.com or Commission Junction. 

Here you’ll find an array of both digital (videos, pdf books, audio files etc.) and physical products that you can promote for a very high percentage commission.  If your reader clicks a link on your blog (which directs them to the product owner’s sales page)and then proceeds to buy the product, you make money. In the case of Clickbank, they will mail you a check every two weeks, if you have made sales.

You can even display Amazon.com books and sell those if you wish, though the percentage commission is much lower, often just a few pennies on the dollar.

Always remember that your readers typically want a SOLUTION; that is, they are looking for a solution to a problem that they currently have. It could be a medical condition they have, or it could be instructions on how to repair a vehicle. Whatever it is, they want to get something, and often it is little more than information; though very SPECIFIC information that will help them solve their problem.

Most new bloggers expect people to find their website quickly and start commenting immediately, but alas, this is not how it works. You could write a three hundred word post each day for months and not get more than a handful of visitors to our blog. Why is this? There are lots of reasons, but two come readily to mind. 

Firstly, if you don’t really understand the subject you are writing about, you will not be using the right terminology (otherwise known as “jargon”) in your posts, so the search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo will not find your posts. That’s not exactly true; the search-engines WILL find your posts, but they will index them in such a way that people SEARCHING for solutions to their problems will be typing different keywords into the search-engines, so they will find OTHER people’s websites instead of yours.

Secondly, if you rely totally on the likes of Google and Yahoo to find and index your blog, you are missing out on potentially thousand of readers, because there are MANY more things you can do to drive visitors (otherwise known as TRAFFIC in the internet marketing world) TO your site. So, instead of being passive and hoping for the best, you actively go out and look for potential readers. This article is a good example of just ONE way that you might get people to visit your blog.

If you want to make money blogging on the internet, you will need to realize that it is not as hard as most people think. Sure, it might take a bit of time to master, but that is with everything in life. The good thing is that it only takes most people days or weeks to start seeing immediate results through writing a blog, or twenty blogs if you want even more cash.

There are many, many people who make money blogging. They don’t just make a little, there are bunches who tend to make enough to stay at home all day and work for themselves. While not everybody will become insanely rich while writing their blogs, you can very easily and quickly work your way up to a nice paycheck every week in no time at all. To do this, you will need a quick rundown of what to expect and the basics that will help you far into the future.

Here are some of the more critical ones….

First, you will need to know the best place to set up your blog if you really want to make money blogging. The best place that I have found for a multitude of reasons has been WordPress. They have everything on their websites, which makes it very easy for even the newest of newcomers to set up multiple blogs in minutes. You can make your blog look exactly like you want with minimal work. Not only that, but there is also something that will help you out even more.

The thing that helps you make money blogging with WordPress is the fact that they are loved by the search engines. This means that WordPress blog tend to pull up very high in the search results of Google and Yahoo when people search for your keywords/subject. You see, search engines will be a big part of your audience. A large percentage of people who find your blog will be from the search engines. You will want to pick a couple of main keyword for your niche, such as “fantasy football insider”, and make sure it is prominent in your blogs title and the text in the main part of your blog.

Last but not least, you will need to promote products as an affiliate to make money blogging. To make money blogging on the web, there is not better way to do it than selling other people’s products. Sure, you can set up Google Adsense ads (I am sure you have seen them everywhere), but that is something that you should leave for when you have mastered the industry. Promoting and advertising products on your blogs as an affiliate is easily the best way to make good cash. You can incorporate the products into your blogs where you see fit and you can also put some links on the sides of your blogs. The fact of the matter is that most bloggers, even popular bloggers, do not make money blogging, not what you would consider good money. But there are a small minority of people who are making a killing by operating blogs. Yes, it can be done. I’ve compiled the top tips for bloggers that actually want to make money blogging.

1. Blog for search traffic

Writing a popular blog post that gets a lot of social traffic is fleeting. Even if your article makes to the front page of a site like Digg.com the traffic boost that you receive will be momentary. If, on the other hand, one of your blog posts ranks for a popular search keyword on Google that same article can bring you traffic for months, even years.

In addition search traffic is targeted traffic. When your article about, say, Blogging Tips ranks number one in Google for “blogging tips” you will only get traffic from people who are looking for information on blogging tips. This will, quite frankly, make you a lot more money as your traffic will be targeted to your content and offers.

2. Write long posts

It is better to write one long blog post with your top ten blogging tips than it is to write 10 one hundred word entries containing one tip each. The reason for this is that it will be easier to rank a 1000 word post in the search engines than it will be to rank a 100 word post. Additionally, you can more easily promote one post and others can promote it for you by linking to it.

3. Sell something

If the point of your blog is to talk about your day then you will not make money. The point of your blog has to be to encourage some kind of profitable activity. The fact of the matter is that reading is not a commercial. When a person comes to your blog and reads your content, no money changes hand. The simple act of reading does not make you (or anyone else) money. Even your advertisers will pull their advertising if your readers only read.

If you recommend a product on your blog you will be able to earn affiliate commissions when your readers take your advice and buy the product. It is best if you have a product of your own to promote and sell, though affiliate marketing is probably more attainable for the average blogger.

Even if you refuse to specifically market any products you must at least be willing to sell your traffic to someone who will try to market to them. You can sell traffic by using a program like adsense or by selling advertising directly.

4. Write about a topic that is commercial

For every blogger who writes about their favorite sports team or political party, I can show you a blogger who has a day job that they have to report to every morning. Bloggers that write about their passions, unless your passion is making money, are not getting rich generally. In order to make money from a blog you need to encourage some sort of profitable activity. Like I said, nobody (especially not the blogger) makes any money when somebody reads their words.

Some topics lend themselves naturally to blogging. Unfortunately, these are the topics you least want to blog because the market is so crowded. I often use the example of politics but another good one is personal finance. Personal finance is a wonderful topic to blog about in theory because it is both commercial (there are lots of advertisers and products for the blogger to recommend) and easy to write about. The problem is that there are thousands of other blogs in the niche already. This is a problem if you want to make any money in the next year. Yes, you may be able to make money with a personal finance blog in time, but it will take a lot of patience. Which brings us to our next tip.

5. Blog where there are no blogs

If you find a topic that is commercial and has products to promote and advertisers to advertise and you can’t think of a single other blog who blogs about that topic, you may have hit the jackpot. Today, there are blogs about just about every mainline thing that you can think, so you have to be willing to dig down into micro-niches or niches that are not so obvious. You can make a lot more money as the single blog in a $10 niche than you can as one-blog-among-a-million in a $1000 niche.

The best topics for new bloggers are those topics which are a little bit unappealing to the masses. For instance, if you come upon a niche that seems promising but that you would be embarrassed to have your name attached to then you might have a winner. And remember that there are lots of bloggers who write under pen names.

Those are my top five tips for making money blogging and I can assure you that if you follow those guidelines and are willing to work hard you can make a very nice living online.

For anyone who has been blogging for any length of time, without any real direction, or strategy, the question invariably comes up after a few short weeks of pointless posting: “Can you really make money with a blog?” Well, the answer is ABSOLUTELY and if you know what you are doing, the process is not only a ton of fun, but also just about the best source of passive income you are going to find.

The key to monetizing your blog is pretty simple: You need to have passion for your topic, constancy in content, and a monetization strategy that piggybacks on the previous two points in an effective manner. If you are blogging, for example, to sell your OWN services, you obviously would not want to add lots of contextual ads, and affiliate offers on your site. Your monetization strategy here, would be FAR different than a blog on diet, for example, whose author was trying to share her successful strategies for dropping weight, all the while pointing her readers to the program (s) she had used to achieve such great results.

Overall, I always advise my clients, pick a strategy going in. No one wants to discover that they’re blog has been picked up and is getting tons of loyal visitors all the while not making enough to even cover the meager monthly hosting. This can only happen if you have no plan…and no strategy ahead of time. But don’t worry, you can always double back and make up for loss income, and while no one likes to leave lots of easy money on the table, it’s never too late to start thinking like a big buck blogger, rather than a deer in the metaphorical headlights when the traffic comes!

Unlike a lot of blog posts, articles and forum posts I have seen, I am not going to talk about ad placement on your blog, or even list building techniques on your blog as a way to make money blogging. As valuable as those kinds of discussions are, they are really only discussing “strategies” and techniques. Little tweaks, tricks and moves that will help generate a little cash from an already established business/blog. Instead, I am going to talk about successful business models that have blogging at the centre of them. Essentially, I am going to discuss three blogging business models that could see you quit your day job, never need one; or simply help you make a nest egg for you and your family when you retire. 

Before we look at these business models, it is important to say that a blog (when done correctly) is like a piece of online real estate. The more work you do on it, the better you make it, the more it is worth and the more you can sell it for if you ever desire to in the future. Everything you do online stays there for a long time, so it is important to choose your business model based on what you enjoy doing, writing about, and you should select a business model that fits well with the way you work and your lifestyle. With that said, let’s get to the meat of it, and take a look at my three favorite blogging business models. 

1. The Personality Strategy- For this business model, you would be working on one blog and one blog alone. The blog would be in an area or “niche” that you were particularly experienced in or expert in. You would share free and valuable information on your industry, would talk about recent news and developments in your market and you would create a mini-community of enthusiasts who will be eager to discuss your content in the form of comments on your blog, and else where on the Internet. From this “platform” (think of your blog as a speaker’s platform) you can build your email list, recommend affiliate products and also create and sell your own products. Very lucrative. 

2. The Authority Strategy- This is a less personality/community focussed website. Instead it is a website with MANY articles and videos etc on a particular niche, or over several niches. Can you make money blogging?

Some say you can; some say you can’t. I say…it’s all up to YOU. Can you make money blogging? You tell me….can you?

As an Internet Marketer I have had many people ask me if blogging can make money. My answer to them is….. Yes it sure can. I personally have several blogs and I have also helped my children to start a blog each.

My oldest son started his blog first as a way to earn some extra pocket money. He made his first affiliate sale within two days and was rather impressed with himself. I have to help the kids out a bit but they do quite well writing their blog posts and keeping it updated. Each time that they make a sale it keeps them motivated to keep going.

Now that my kids are doing so well with their blogs that whenever someone asks me if you can make money blogging I just tell them about my kids, because if a ten year old boy can do it then you can too.

When setting up your own blog you need to consider whether you want to register your own domain name or opt to use a domain provided by the blogging service you registered with. If your looking to make money from your blog, I highly recommend registering your own domain to ensure you have maximum control.

Here are four options available to make money online from blogging:

1. Advertise with Google AdSense. A blog can be based around any topic you choose. It’s best to go for something you’re familiar with and have a bit of knowledge about already. If opting to make money through advertising on your blog you want to make sure there is a high enough cost per click for the keyword you’re targeting. If you decide to target a keyword that is only paying five cents per click it will take a long time and copious amounts of traffic before you start making any money. Focus on keywords that have a good cost per click of at least one dollar, preferable two or three dollars. The higher the better.

2. Promote Affiliate Products. Your next option is tailor your blog around promoting affiliate products. First you need to find an affiliate product that you could base your blog on. There are a number of factors you need to take into consideration when deciding what products to promote such as the commission you’ll receive per sale, level of competition and refund rate. Once you’ve found the product next you need to provide valuable content on your blog that relates to the affiliate product you’ve chosen to promote. You could write articles relevant to the product and then put your affiliate link at the end of the article. Something like “Want to learn more? Visit this website.”

3. Promote CPA Networks. A CPA network will allow you to promote products through something called pay per lead. All this means, is you get paid upon referring someone to their website. Referring could mean getting a visitor to fill out a questionnaire on the website, sign up to an opt-in list or even just leave their post code. It doesn’t take much to get the commission. If you develop a blog around a similar topic to a pay per lead program your promoting, you could direct visitors on your blog to go and check out the pay per lead offer and make money this way.

4. Set up a review site. Again, this would be tailored around affiliate products. Plenty of people make money online reviewing affiliate products and then referring visitors through their affiliate link. You don’t have to buy the product yourself, simply go and read other people’s reviews and then form your own opinion based on what you’ve read.
